UNOH Names Vavro Head Women’s Basketball Coach

The University of Northwestern Ohio is proud to announce the hiring of Matthew Vavro as the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach for the Racers. Vavro takes over the program from former coach Andre Smith who resigned at the end of the 2021-22 season.

“We are thrilled to welcome Matt Vavro as our next Head Women’s Basketball Coach here at UNOH,” said Director of Athletics Jen Dervarics. “Matt quickly distinguished himself during our national search. He brings a wealth of experience coaching collegiate women’s basketball and has established himself as a proven leader and effective recruiter. We are excited for the future of the Racer Women’s Basketball program under Matt’s tutelage.”

Vavro comes to UNOH from Otero College in Colorado, but is orginally from the Cleveland, Ohio area. Vavro has nine years of collegiate coaching experience, six of which have been as a Head Coach. Consistently he has led teams that have been ranked in the top 20 nationally and has set the single season win’s record at Danville Area Community College and Lincoln College in Illinois. In the 2017-18 season with Lincoln College, Vavro was also awarded Coach of the Year.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank Jen Dervarics, Chris Adams and the entire search committee for entrusting me to be the next leader of the Racers Women’s Basketball program here at the University of Northwestern Ohio,” said Vavro. “I am extremely excited about the future of this program and look forward to hitting the ground running! We plan on bringing a fun style of basketball that will be enjoyable for our players to play in and entertaining for our fan base to watch! We can’t wait to see everybody this upcoming season at The Garage! Go Racers!”

Coach Vavro began his duties late last week and has already met with the current players. The 2022-23 playing season begins the end of October.
