UNH Women’s Basketball Staff Hires

University of New Hampshire women’s basketball head coach Kelsey Hogan announced Friday the hiring of assistant coaches Derek Marchione and Katy Howard to join second-year assistant coach Peyton Booth on the Wildcats’ coaching staff.

“We are extremely excited to welcome both Derek and Katy to UNH,” Hogan said. “We feel they are terrific additions to our Wildcat family and will help take this program to new heights.”

Marchione, who will also be UNH’s recruiting coordinator, served as head women’s basketball coach at SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y., in 2019-20. In Marchione’s lone season at the helm, he was named East District Coach of the Year for guiding the Lady Generals to a 29-2 record, the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship, Region XV Championship, District East A Championship and a berth in the NJCAA DII National Championship. The native of Waterford, N.Y. and Keene State College graduate was previously head girls’ coach at Putnam Science Academy (Putnam, Conn.) for two seasons. Marchione, who started the Putnam program in 2017, coached current UNH guard Helena Delaruelle along with a number of other players who went on to earn Division I basketball scholarships.

“Derek is an energetic recruiter with great national and international recruiting ties,” Hogan said. “He brings great experience, knowledge and passion for the game to UNH. His work ethic and defensive philosophy make him a great addition to our program.”

Howard comes to Durham following three years as assistant coach at Division II Southern New Hampshire University for UNH alumna Karen Pinkos from 2017-20. Prior to working at SNHU, Howard coached on the staff at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh from 2014-17. The Pittsburgh native helped the Tartans post program-best win totals in both 2015-16 and 2016-17. The team reached the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in program history in 2016 and followed that campaign with an ECAC Division III title in 2017. Howard’s coaching career began in 2013-14 as an assistant at Worcester State University. Howard was a four-year starter and 1,000-point scorer in 114 career games at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., where she set the program’s record for career minutes and games started.

“Katy brings experience in all levels of college basketball,” Hogan said. “As a successful student-athlete and a prominent assistant coach at both the Division II and Division III levels, she has a tireless work ethic and has shown great ability to positively impact young women in all areas of life. That is exactly what we are looking for to bring this program to the next level.”
