UMBC women’s basketball head coach Phil Stern recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the program through the 2020-2021 season, UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall announced.

“I am so pleased that Phil will be continuing to lead our women’s basketball program well into the future. His recruiting contacts are vast and his basketball acumen is as strong as there is in the game,” Director of Athletics Tim Hall stated. “What really sets him apart, though, is his comprehensive commitment to the academic success and welfare of his student-athletes. I am confident that we are in a really good position to build on his programs recent success.”

Stern just completed his 14th season with the Retrievers, and his 20th season overall with an 18-14 record, including a quarterfinal round berth in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The Retrievers earned their first ever post-season victory with a 61-49 win against Fairfield in the first round of the WBI.

During his 14 years in Baltimore, Stern has amassed a record of 174-249, including an America East Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. Stern also took the Retrievers to an America East regular season title and WNIT bid in 2011, finishing the season with a 12-1 record at home.

“This is such an exciting time to be a part of UMBC Athletics,” Stern said. “The leadership of Tim (Hall) and the construction of the new arena give us a very bright future. I would like to thank Dr. Hrabowski and Dr. Young for their commitment to the women’s basketball program,” he would go on to say.

A native of Oceanside, N.Y., Stern graduated from Concordia College in 1994 with a bachelor of arts degree in business education. He currently resides in Baltimore, and is married to Ashley Cieplicki who is currently the head women’s basketball coach at Rutgers-Newark.
