UMass names DBO

The University of Massachusetts women’s basketball program and head coach Sharon Dawley announced the hiring of former University of Vermont star May Kotsopoulos as the Director of Basketball Operations on Monday. Kotsopoulos was a four-year starter for Dawley’s Catamount program from 2006-10, helping the team earn a pair of NCAA Tournament berths and back-to-back America East Conference Championships.

Kotsopoulos comes to UMass after a successful overseas career in Greece in the Greek 1A League. The Waterloo, Ontario, native was named Eurobasket.com All-Greek Team twice, was selected as the Greek League Newcomer of the Year and earned a place on the country’s national team.

Prior to competing overseas, Kotsopoulos played for Vermont from 2006-10 and assisted Dawley in bringing the program to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances while twice winnings the America East Conference Tournament. An all-around player, Kotsopoulos averaged 13.7 points over a 129-game career with 124 appearances in the starting lineup.

For her efforts on the court, Kotsopoulos was lauded by numerous organizations, including being named the America East Defensive Player of the Year during 2007-08 season and taking home three All-America East Team and four America East All-Defensive team awards.

Paralleling her success on the court in the classroom, Kotsopoulos was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American during the 2009-10 season, secured a pair of ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 1 laurels and was recognized three times as an America East Conference Scholar Athlete.
