Western Carolina Head Coach Heather Kearney today announced the addition of Tyler Smith as an assistant coach for Catamount women’s basketball.
“I’m so thankful for the opportunity to work under Coach Heather Kearney, her legacy of creating championship cultures is special,” Smith said. “Her vision for WCU athletics will be a driving factor for the success that is to come. I am so excited and blessed to be back in the mountains of North Carolina. Go Catamounts!”
Prior to coming to Western Carolina Smith spent one season with Queens University as an assistant coach. She joined the Royals after spending two seasons at Kansas Wesleyan University. While there, she helped lead the Coyotes to 35 total wins and back-to-back appearances in the KCAC Tournament. Smith was responsible for the development of post players, overseeing team academic success, scouting opponents and recruiting.
She spent two seasons as head coach of Kansas Wesleyan’s junior varsity team, posting a 28-10 overall record. She also organized numerous community service and alumni events while also working as a camp coach during the summer.
“I am excited to welcome Tyler to our Catamount family,” Kearney said. “Tyler has a dynamic personality and is well connected on the recruiting scene in North and South Carolina, as well as the Maryland and Virginia area. She possesses the ability to relate to student-athletes and their families which will be a huge benefit to us from a recruiting standpoint. She is excited about committing to the process of growing our WCU Women’s Basketball program, and we are so thankful to have her as part of our team.”
Prior to her time at KWU, Smith played four years of collegiate basketball at UNC Asheville. She appeared in 76 games for the Bulldogs and was a part of a team in 2015-16 that won both the Big South Regular Season Championship and the Big South Tournament Championship.
Smith earned a Master of Business Administration from Kansas Wesleyan after graduating from UNC Asheville with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management.
