Trinity College Tabs Garner As Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Trinity College Athletic Director Mike Renwick has appointed Emily Garner as its new head women’s basketball coach.  Garner becomes the sixth head coach in the 41-year history of the Trinity women’s basketball program, after honing her skills for the last six seasons as a NCAA Division I assistant coach at Long Island University-Brooklyn and the United States Military Academy.  At Army, where she served as an assistant from 2012 to 2016, Garner helped the Black Knights post a four-year record of 99-28 with two NCAA appearances and two WNIT appearances.  Garner replaces Wendy Davis, who resigned in May after posting a 137-128 mark in 11 years coaching the Bantams.  Trinity finished 2015-16 with a 12-11 record and tied for 10th place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with a 1-9 league mark.

“I am very pleased to announce the hiring of Emily Garner as our next head women’s basketball coach,” said Renwick. “Emily comes to Trinity with such a tremendous respect and belief in the student-athlete model we strive to attain both at Trinity and within the NESCAC. She is dedicated to building a true team, which emphasizes excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. I am truly excited to partner with Emily in building this program to future success.”

Garner began her coaching career in 2010 as a graduate assistant at LIU-Brooklyn following a fine playing career at Lafayette College.  After two seasons coaching the Blackbirds, she joined the staff at Army where her responsibilities included post player development, opponent scouting, head junior varsity coach, compliance, and summer camps.  Last winter, Army posted a program-best record of 29-3 and won both the regular-season and tournament Patriot League titles.  Garner, who mentored two Patriot League Players of the Year at West Point, was promoted to recruiting coordinator by legendary Army Head Coach Dave Magarity in the spring of 2015.  Garner earned her bachelor’s degree from Lafayette in English with minors in economics and business in 2009 and also holds a master’s degree in secondary education (English) from Long Island University.  A three-year starter for the Leopards, Garner was elected captain and garnered Patriot League All-Tournament honors in her senior season.

“I am extremely excited and honored to be joining the Trinity family as the new head women’s basketball coach,” said Garner. “I would like to thank Mike Renwick and the entire search committee for the opportunity, and I am thrilled to represent a world class institution such as Trinity College. I’m eager to get on campus and join the team as we work to add to the tradition of excellence that is Trinity College athletics.”
