University of Toledo Head Women’s Basketball Coach Ginny Boggess has signed a contract extension through the 2029-30 season, Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair announced.
The extension follows Boggess’ impressive first season leading the Rockets. The Hamlin, W. Va. native led Toledo to a 24-9 overall record, a 13-5 mark and second-place finish in the MAC, an appearance in the MAC Championship game and a berth in the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament where the Rockets hosted Minnesota in first-round action.
“We are thrilled to extend Coach Boggess’ contract.” said Blair. “Ginny’s first season at Toledo was successful in every way, from the wins on the court and relentlessly engaging the community, to bringing fans to Savage Arena and breaking records in the classroom. Coach Boggess has shown that she understands the importance of our women’s basketball program to the University of Toledo, Northwest Ohio and increasingly, a national audience. We are excited about her leadership going forward and believe the future of Toledo Women’s Basketball is incredibly bright.”
“Thank you to Bryan Blair, interim President Matt Schroeder and the Board of Trustees for their trust and confidence,” said Boggess. “I am incredibly fortunate to be perfectly aligned with our leadership. Because of their unwavering support and commitment to the long-term success of the program, I believe the best is yet to come. I also thank Team Toledo for embracing me and my family, and welcoming us with open arms. Your passion is unmatched and I am honored to be your coach. Our staff laid a strong foundation in year one and we are excited to seize the momentum.”
Under Boggess’ guidance, Toledo continued its run as one of the top programs in the country. The Rockets averaged 4,185 fans per game, the third-highest mark in program history and ranking No. 33 in the country. Toledo led the MAC in attendance for the 34th-straight season and was top-40 in the country for the 14th-consecutive campaign. A crowd of 6,527 on Jan. 25 against Bowling Green was the fourth-largest women’s basketball crowd in Savage Arena history and the largest ever in the Battle of I-75.
UT posted an 8-0 record in non-conference games against mid-major programs. Toledo swept its MAC-SBC Challenge games with wins against Marshall and Old Dominion and won the Cherokee Invitational crown with victories against Troy and Liberty. Toledo picked up nine victories against programs which reached a national postseason tournament including wins over NCAA Tournament teams Liberty (Dec. 19) and Ball State (Feb. 19) and four total victories against WNIT finalists in Buffalo (three times) and Troy.
Boggess’ 24 wins were just one away from matching Bill Fennelly (1988-89) and Mark Ehlen (1995-96) for the most by a first-year Toledo head coach.
Toledo also earned four Mid-American postseason conference awards. Nan Garcia was named the Sixth Player of the Year, Sammi Mikonowicz was selected to the Second Team, Kendall Carruthers as an Honorable Mention and Faith Fedd-Robinson to the league’s All-Freshman Team. Garcia’s Sixth Player of the Year honor marked the fourth-consecutive season Toledo has earned a major MAC award.
The Rockets also marked a record performance in the classroom, with a department-leading 3.820 team GPA in the fall semester, the first time women’s basketball has led the department for GPA in a term.
Toledo totaled 13 selections to the Dean’s and President’s Lists last semester. Garcia, Mikonowicz, Cadence Dykstra and Ella Weaver were each named to the College Sports Communicators’ Academic All-District Team, reaching the maximum of four nominees from one program for the award. Additionally, Mikonowicz and Jessica Cook claimed MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors during the season.
