Todd Buchanan Resigns as Houston Head Coach

The University of Houston Department of Athletics announced Saturday Houston Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Todd Buchanan, has resigned due to personal reasons. Associate Head Coach Wade Scott, who is in his eighth season at UH and third as Associate Head Coach, will take over as the program’s Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season, effective immediately.

“We thank Todd for his hard work over the past four years and his contributions, not just to the University of Houston, but to the game of basketball and the lives of our student-athletes,” said UH Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades. “We wish nothing but the best for Todd, his wife Michelle, and their son Colton.”

Buchanan was in his fourth year as head coach of the Cougars and compiled a record of 46-56 while at UH. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Houston claimed the Conference USA Championship with a perfect 16-0 conference record and returned to the NCAA Women’s Tournament for the first time since 2005.

“I’ve made the decision to step away from the game of basketball for personal reasons. It is time to restore my life balance and in turn, take better care of myself and my family,” said Buchanan. “I’d like to thank Mack Rhoades, DeJuena Chizer and the entire University of Houston family. Although I’m stepping away, I will always have a place in my heart for UH and wish the University nothing but tremendous success.”

Scott, who has been in the coaching profession since 1993, has 12 years of head coaching experience on the collegiate level with stops at Western Oklahoma State College, Clarendon College and Grayson County College.
