Texas A&M Commerce Head women’s basketball coach Jason Burton announced a key addition to his staff, introducing Markeith Brown as the program’s new assistant.
“We are very happy to be able to get a coach of Markeith’s caliber on our staff,” said Burton, “I’m glad to have him as a part of our Lion family.”
Brown comes to Commerce after spending five years at nearby LeTourneau University, where he acted as both the women’s assistant coach as well as the head coach for the women’s cross country program. He helped lead the basketball program to the first ASC Tournament in program-history during the 2013-14 campaign.
Prior to his time at LeTourneau, Brown was a well-traveled coach, lending his services to Central Lafourche High School, Vermillion Catholic High School, the Lake Jackson Lakers of the Texas Professional League, and the Texas City Rangers of the American Basketball Association.
As a player, Brown played for both East Central Community College and Nicholls State University. He received his BS in general studies from Nicholls State in 2004.
“His experience coaching women, his playing experience at Nicholls State and professionally, and his overall character will be drawn upon greatly to continue to move this program forward,” said Burton.
He takes on the role with the Lions created by the departure of former three-year assistant Leonard Bishop, who left the program last month to take up a position at Stephen F. Austin.
