Tampa hires assistant

University of Tampa head women’s basketball coach Tom Jessee has announced the addition of Andrell Smith to his staff as an assistant coach.

“We are excited to have Andrell join our staff as she has a lot to bring to the game,” says Jessee. “She will work with our guards and her experience as a player will give all our players a great example of how to work. I look forward to helping Andrell take the next step in her career. Our Spartan family welcomes Andrell to it.”

Smith was previously with the Saint Leo University women’s basketball program as an assistant coach for the 2013-14 season. Smith joined the Lions after graduating from the University of South Florida in May of 2012, where she played as a point guard for two seasons.

In her first full season with Saint Leo, the Lions turned in their best season in program history, posting a record 20-10 record, during the 2013-2014 campaign, and advancing to their first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament.

Smith brings a wealth of basketball experience, as she also excelled at a very high level. During her two seasons with the USF Bulls, Smith was named Defensive MVP and selected to the All Big-East Second Team in 2013. In addition, her leadership skills earned her a spot as a team captain during her senior season.

Prior to her experience at USF, Smith was a member of the Gulf Coast Community College team in Panama City, Fla. In two seasons with the junior college Smith’s team won back-to-back conference championships and won the 2010 Junior College National Championship. In 2010, Smith was also named to the Junior College National All-Tournament Team.
