Tammy A. Bagby Hired as Women’s Head Basketball Coach at Cheyney University

Cheyney University Interim Athletic Director Suzanne Kilian announced that Tammy A. Bagby has been hired as head women’s basketball coach.

Bagby comes to Cheyney with over 20 years of experience as a high school, collegiate and professional basketball coach. She began her collegiate coaching career at Clark Atlanta University in 1995, and has been assistant coach at Morgan State, Tennessee State and most recently Jackson State from 2014 until she became the head coach at Cheyney.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with Tammy.” Kilian said, “Her wealth of experience as a player and a coach adds to the atmosphere around here. Her energy and enthusiasm will bring a spark to our team and our program, and hopefully that will translate into wins during the season.”

Bagby said she was honored to become the head coach at Cheyney. “I would like to thank Interim President, Dr. Pogue, Interim Athletic Director Sue Kilian, Interim Provost, Dr. Dixon and Director of Student Affairs, Marcia Robinson for this amazing opportunity. Cheyney University will always be a part of women’s basketball history and I’m excited to have a chance to build on that legacy.”

Cheyney will be Tammy’s first opportunity to be a head coach at the collegiate level.

From 2003-06, Bagby served as the head coach In Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland and Australia, where she taught and instructed fundamentals basketball skills to USA student-athletes.

From 2009-10 she served as an assistant coach and Director of Basketball Operations for the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock where she had the opportunity to work under the tutelage of Naismith Hall of Fame Head Coach Nolan Richardson.

“She was my assistant coach for the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock, her work ethic was impeccable and she did whatever it took to get the job done. Many coaches only understand X’s and O’s, but her in-depth knowledge of all things basketball never ceases to amaze me. Coach Bagby is extraordinary in communication and interpersonal skills, which allows her to communicate well with a wide range of personalities.”

Bagby, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and played collegiately at Langston University, where she would finish in the programs top ten in career three-pointers attempted and made, steals and assists. Following her collegiate playing career, Tammy played professionally in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
