William & Mary Director of Athletics Brian D. Mann announced this evening that Tribe Head Women’s Basketball Coach Ed Swanson‘s contract will not be renewed, bringing his nine-year tenure to a conclusion.
“We are very grateful to Coach Swanson for his many contributions since 2013,” Mann said. “We appreciate his hard work and dedication, and while it is always difficult to part ways with a colleague, we believe the the time is right for new leadership going forward.”
As head coach from 2013-22, Swanson led the Tribe to a 126-128 overall record (.496 winning percentage), including 63-87 in the Colonial Athletic Assocation (.420).
Swanson’s 126 wins rank third all-time in W&M women’s basketball history. Prior to his time in Williamsburg, Swanson led Sacred Heart University (CT) through its transition to a NCAA Division I program, compiling a 280-145 (.664) record at that level. During 32 seasons as a head coach at all levels, Swanson has amassed 532 career victories.
“In speaking with alumnae, it’s clear how much Ed did to bolster our program while graduating student-athletes prepared for lifelong success beyond basketball. He has given us a great foundation upon which we will launch a new and successful chapter in Tribe women’s basketball. We wish Ed and his family the very best,” Mann said.
A national search for William & Mary’s next women’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
