Campbell women’s basketball welcomes former Mount St. Mary’s director of women’s basketball operations Adam Surguine as the special assistant to Head Coach Wanda Watkins beginning in the 2015-16 season.
Surguine replaces Brittany Cox on the women’s basketball staff for Watkins’ 35th season at the helm of the program. Cox recently left the program to take the head women’s basketball coaching position at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, N.C.
“I think the transition from Mount St. Mary’s to Campbell is a natural one,” Surguine said. “My time there has prepared me for this opportunity, and I believe that will make this a very positive transition as well. Having the opportunity to work with Coach Watkins was extremely appealing for this position. Her wisdom is just incredible, and I want to spend a lot of time with her to learn a lot. All of the players clearly respect her, and I can’t think of anyone better to work for.”
Surguine joins the Lady Camels after one year as the director of women’s basketball operations with the Mountaineers in 2014-15. He coordinated nearly all aspects of the program, including travel, classes, practices, strength and conditioning and community service, for the Northeast Conference quarterfinalists.
Prior to transitioning into his coaching career, Surguine played for his alma mater, Lancaster Bible College, during his freshman and sophomore years. In his junior year, he became a student assistant coach for the Chargers and was heavily involved in practice planning, player development and recruiting for the squad over his final two undergraduate years.
In 2010, Surguine was elevated to a full-time assistant coaching position with the Chargers, taking on additional responsbilities with game and practice filming as well as directing the strength and conditioning program. In addition, Surguine coordinated all non-conference scheduling and travel for the women’s squad.
During the 2013-14 year, Surguine assumed the role of operations manager for the athletic department, overseeing all equipment operations for Lancaster’s 12 intercollegiate programs, assisting with the maintainence and renovation of facilities and the management of student workers, travel and intramurals.
His tenure as an assistant coach at Lancaster saw the Chargers capture a pair of NCCAA East Region championships, a NEAC championship, an NCAA Division III tournament appearance and a fifth-place finish in NCCAA Division II in 2013-14. In total, Lancaster posted a 74-40 record in his four years, including a 47-12 mark over his final two seasons.
“I believe that I bring championship experience to the staff here at Campbell, as well as Division I experience,” Surguine said.
Surguine joins a Lady Camels program that has won at least 19 games in each of the last three seasons and posted a 13-2 record at Gore Arena in 2014-15, its best home mark since the 1987-88 campaign.
“I think this team has a very balanced dynamic and has the potential to provide some very strong leadership,” Surguine said of the Lady Camels. “Seeing this team start to come together pretty strongly already has the potential to have some impressive results this season.”
“Adam is a wonderful fit for our program. He brings a great enthusiasm along with good experience to our staff,” Watkins said of the addition. “He is a quality individual who has a deep passion for our game. We are so excited to have he and his wife Amanda join our CU family.”
