Sul Ross State hires Blankenship as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach

As a player, Victoria Blankenship brought a lot of intensity to the court during her career that saw time at the junior college and NCAA Division II levels.

Blankenship now wants to engrave that same mentality in her first season as a coach.

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Blankenship joins the Sul Ross State women’s basketball program as its new assistant coach.

“I’m very excited to be here. I’m very excited to step into the role and I think I can bring a lot to it,” she said. “I hope to bring intensity, aggressiveness and a winning mentality to the program.”

Blankenship played her entire high school career in the state of Texas as she moved from North Carolina to Corpus Christi where she attended West Oso High School before transferring to North Shore Senior High School in Houston.

She was a member of a stellar 36-1 North Shore program that reached the state semifinals her senior year.

Blankenship then took her talent to Tyler Junior College where she played in all 30 contests as she ranked 30th in the nation with 44 offensive rebounds.

She then transferred to San Jacinto College-North during the 2017-2018 season where she averaged 6.9 rebounds a game while tallying 17 double-figure games.

Blankenship went on to attend Oklahoma Baptist where she earned honorable mention Great American Conference honors after leading her team in scoring and rebounding.

During the 2019-2020 season, she wrapped up her career at Kentucky State earning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week recognition as she went on to average 12.6 points per game.

Blankenship has already been hard at work by bringing in two new players from the Houston area. The Lobos added seven new players to the roster for this upcoming season while they return six.

Blankenship is excited for the opportunity to work with third-year head coach E.J. Lee Smith.

“I think the future is bright. I know Sul Ross State just moved up to Division II, so I hope to bring some experience to that and bring a different swag and attitude to the program altogether,” she said. “I’m just hoping from this year on that we could just bring in a lot of diversity to the court.

“I’m hoping with my connections that we can bring in some players that can change it up and keep people on their toes.”
