St. Clair County Community College (SC4) has announced the hiring of Dion Cox as the program’s new head women’s basketball coach, bringing home a familiar face with deep roots in the Skippers basketball tradition.
Cox returns to SC4 after a distinguished tenure as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program for more than a decade, following his playing career as a Skipper. His connection to the college spans multiple generations of success, both on the court and on the sideline.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Dion into this role,” said Sarah Rutallie, SC4’s Chief of Staff and Interim Athletic Director. “He understands what it means to be a Skipper, values our student-athletes, and has spent years helping build a winning culture here. His experience and passion for SC4 make him a natural fit to lead our women’s basketball program.”
As a former SC4 player, Cox brings firsthand knowledge of the college’s athletic culture and expectations. His transition into coaching saw him spend over 10 years working with the men’s program, where he played a key role in player development, game preparation, and program stability.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead this program,” Cox said. “SC4 has always been home to me. This is a place that helped shape who I am as a player and coach, and I’m excited to bring that experience to our women’s basketball team.”
Cox emphasized his commitment to developing student-athletes both athletically and academically while building a competitive and cohesive program. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he also serves the College as a College Housing Specialist, where he works closely with students on housing needs, overall wellness, and supporting their success.
“I’m looking forward to building strong relationships with our players, recruiting student-athletes who fit our culture, and representing SC4 the right way,” he added.
Cox will begin his duties immediately as he prepares the program for the upcoming season.
