Special Jennings named assistant women’s basketball coach at Flagler College

Flagler College head women’s basketball coach Erika Lang-Montgomery announced this afternoon that Special Jennings has been hired as an assistant coach. She started on Aug. 2.

“I am excited to have Special join my staff and our basketball family,” said Lang-Montgomery. “I have witnessed first-hand the impact she made at Augusta. “She has experienced post-season play as a player and as a coach. Special is a proven winner and she will be a great role model for our players.”

Jennings joins the Flagler staff after spending the past three seasons as the assistant coach at Peach Belt Conference rival Augusta University. She was responsible for recruiting student-athletes, assisting in planning and organizing practices, and assist in community outreach plans for the program. The Jaguars went 46-40 overall and a 30-27 in the conference during her time on the coaching staff. Augusta posted a record of 24-9 in 2015-16 and went 14-5 in conference play. The Jaguars made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2008 and advanced to the region final. Augusta opened the regional with a 79-70 win over the host and top-seed, Limestone College, who entered the tournament with an undefeated record and a No. 2 ranking.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join a program with outstanding tradition and history,” said Jennings. “I want to thank Coach Lang-Montgomery and Mr. (Jud) Damon for their trust in allowing me to join not only a fine athletic department, but a terrific College as well. It’s a privilege to be joining the Flagler College family and I can’t wait to get started and give my best effort on a daily basis to continue the team’s progress.”

Prior to her time at Augusta, Jennings served as an administrative assistant for the woman’s basketball program at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio for the 2013-14 season. That year the Raiders won its first Horizon League title and made its first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance.

Jennings played professionally in Finland from 2011 to 2013 following a four-year career at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She is tied for fourth in career assists with 515 and fifth in free throw percentage (77.3) at Xavier. Jennings was a two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection, earning second team honors as a junior and third-team honors as a senior. She helped lead the Musketeers to three A-10 Tournament titles (2008-11) and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight in 2008. Jennings led the A-10 in assists in 2010-11.
