South Dakota women’s basketball head coach Dawn Plitzuweit is pleased to announce the additions of Russ Rose and Kayla Tetschlag to her staff as assistant coaches for the 2016-17 season.
Rose comes to South Dakota after spending the past two seasons on Plitzuweit’s staff at Northern Kentucky. Rose brings seven years of coaching experience from the high school, AAU and collegiate levels.
“I have had the privilege of working alongside Russ for the past two years and he is absolutely incredible,” said Plitzuweit. “He is an outstanding coach with a great mind for the game. He did an exceptional job of assisting our players at Northern Kentucky in their personal development as well. I could not be more excited that Russ, his wife, Shannon, and their son, Cam, are joining our Coyote family!”
At Northern Kentucky, Rose worked on player skill development, recruitment, game plans, video operations and managed summer basketball camps.
Rose was an assistant at his alma mater, Davenport University, prior to joining Plitzuweit’s staff. His coaching stops include Central Michigan University, Michigan Basketball Club (AAU), and Hopkins High School. Rose also spent a season as Central Michigan’s video coordinator, breaking down film and developing scouting reports for the team.
Rose, a four-year letterwinner for Danvenport’s men’s basketball team, earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2007. He received his MBA from Davenport in 2014.
Tetschlag joins the Coyote staff after having spent the past season as the top assistant at the University of Sioux Falls. Prior to that, she spent four years abroad playing professional basketball in Europe. Tetschlag, who graduated from Green Bay, was the Horizon League Player of the Year in 2011.
“Kayla was an outstanding player at the mid-major level who led the Green Bay program to unprecedented success,” Plitzuweit said. “She continued her playing career at the professional level and has now begun her career as a collegiate coach. With her high-energy personality, her knowledge of the game and her ability to connect with others, she is truly a rising star in the coaching profession. I am thrilled to welcome Kayla to South Dakota!”
In her first season on staff at Sioux Falls, the Cougars won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Tetschlag assisted with player development, scouted opponents, served as recruiting coordinator, supervised academics and handled administrative operations of the program.
Tetschlag’s professional basketball experience included stops in Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. She earned awards such as the Luxembourg Defensive Player of the Year and All-German League Forward of the Year. In four seasons abroad, she averaged a double-double and consistently ranked among her respective league’s top-three for points and rebounds.
Tetschlag received the Horizon League Cecil N. Colman Medal of Honor at the conclusion of her Green Bay playing career. She led Green Bay to four Horizon League titles, three NCAA Tournaments and the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2011. Tetschlag was twice first-team all-league and on the all-defensive team as a senior. She earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors as a junior and senior.
Tetschlag graduated from Green Bay in 2011 with a bachelor’s of business administration with a marketing emphasis. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in management from Green Bay.
