South Alabama staff update

University of South Alabama women’s basketball head coach Terry Fowler announced on Monday the promotion of Mallory Luckett to assistant coach and the hiring of Matthew Daniels as the new director of basketball operations.

Luckett served as the Jaguar women’s director of operations last season and arrived on the USA campus after spending three seasons on the North Alabama coaching staff under Fowler.

"I’m excited to have Mallory join our staff on the court," Fowler said. "She is familiar with our culture, system and has a great way of connecting with student-athletes. Mallory has been a worker and winner throughout her playing career and she brings those qualities to the coaching profession. She will work with our point guards and I’m excited to see their development under her tutelage."

Following two seasons as graduate assistant coach, Luckett moved into an assistant coach position for the 2012-13 season for the Lions after earning her master’s degree in criminal justice at UNA. During her first year at North Alabama, Luckett helped guide the Lions to a 21-7 record, which included a first-place finish in the Gulf South Conference East Division. UNA also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 1994.

Luckett arrived at UNA after a four-year playing career at Murray State. After originally walking on to play for MSU, she earned a scholarship her sophomore year and became a starter her junior and senior seasons. She made history her senior year as only the second Racer to earn a triple-double with 14 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds against Jacksonville State.

While at Murray State, Luckett was a part of a regular-season championship and a tournament championship, which granted an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. She ended her senior season leading her team in assists, steals and rebounds, while averaging nearly 10 points per game.

In May of 2010, Luckett received her bachelor’s degree in organizational communication at Murray State. She is a native of Louisville, Kentucky where she graduated from Mercy Academy in 2006.

Daniels joins the Jaguar program after spending one season at Jacksonville University where he served as a as a graduate assistant coach on the men’s basketball staff under Cliff Warren during the 2013-14 season.

"Matthew is an outstanding young man that I’ve had the pleasure to watch grow from his freshman year at North Alabama to now," Fowler stated. "He is a servant leader and will be a great representative of our program and the university. He has the ability to make everyone else’s life a little easier."

As a graduate assistant coach with the Dolphins, Daniels organized and edited video for scouting and player development, while also scheduling team functions and events.

While at JU, Daniels began work on his masters of education degree in leadership and learning with a concentration in intentional leadership.

Daniels earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of North Alabama in 2012. During his time in Florence, Daniels served as a student manager for four seasons (2008-12) for Lions’ head coach Bobby Champagne. As a senior, Daniels was also a student worker in the UNA Compliance Office.

He has been a member of Rising Coaches Elite since June 2011.
