SMU Director of Athletics Rick Hart has announced a change in leadership for the Mustang women’s basketball program.
“I have made the decision not to renew Coach Travis Mays‘ contract,” said Hart. “During his tenure, our program made strides in several key areas; however, at the end of the day, the on-court record of our teams did not reach the level of success we hoped for our program. We are grateful to Coach Mays for his commitment to SMU women’s basketball and we wish him and his family the very best.
“We remain committed to competing for championships and, at this time, will begin a national search to identify the next head women’s basketball coach. The value of an SMU degree and quality of life in Dallas, Texas, combined with championship-caliber facilities and a commitment to comprehensive excellence, make this an incredible opportunity for the right leader.”
In five seasons, Mays compiled a 58-80 record and led SMU to a berth in the 2017 WNIT.
“It has truly been an honor to be the head coach of the SMU women’s basketball program,” said Mays. “I want to thank President Turner and Rick Hart for the opportunity to serve this great institution over the last five years. Although we did not achieve the level of on-court success we envisioned, I am extremely proud of our student-athletes’ success in the classroom and as citizens of this campus. I am indebted to the talented and dedicated staff who worked hard each day to make our program and its student-athletes successful. We were proud to represent this university and will always be grateful for our time on the Hilltop.”
A national search for a replacement will begin immediately.
