SIUE adds assistant

Southern Illinois-Edwardsville women’s basketball Head Coach Paula Buscher named Todd Schultze an assistant coach for the Cougars.

Schultze returns to the Midwest after spending one season as the head assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He served as the recruiting coordinator as well as game and practice coordinator.

Schulze previously spent 12 seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach and kinesiology instructor at Western Illinois. Schultze was instrumental in coaching WIU’s Sadie Webb to Summit League Newcomer of the Year honors as well as a spot on the 2010-11 All-Newcomer team. His duties at WIU included recruiting, scheduling, and game preparation.

During his tenure at Western Illinois, Schultze helped the Leathernecks develop 17 all-Summit League selections, including three Players of the Year. He also oversaw two Summit League Defensive Players of the Year. While at WIU, Schulze helped the Leathernecks to four consecutive Summit League regular-season championships from 2003 to 2006.

He was instrumental in the development of honorable mention WBCA/Kodak All-American Zane Teilane who was drafted by the Detroit Shock in the WNBA Draft. Zane also played in the 2008 Summer Olympics as a member of the Latvia team. Schulze also coached former WIU All-Conference player Tugba Palazoglu who competed at the 2012 London Olympics for Turkey.

Schlutze previously coach at Butler County (Kansas) Community College, Highland (Kansas) Community College, and Ottawa University. While at Butler County, he coached volleyball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and served as an assistant for the men’s basketball team. While at Highland, he served as an assistant coach for men’s basketball. At Ottawa, his basketball teams appeared in the NAIA National Tournament in 1992 and 1994.
