Shoemaker elevated to Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Bethel College (KS)

Bethel College has announced the hiring of Jara Shoemaker as the next head coach of the women’s basketball program. Shoemaker, who served as an assistant coach for the Threshers during the 2024-25 season, will take over for head coach Rocky Lamar.

A Kansas native, Shoemaker is a graduate of Minneapolis High School. She went on to play two years of collegiate basketball at Barton Community College, where she earned her Associate of Arts degree. After stepping away from school for a time, Shoemaker completed her bachelor’s degree at Fort Hays State University.

Before transitioning into coaching, Shoemaker spent a decade in the health care industry. Her passion for mentorship and sports led her back to the game as an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Life Prep Academy in Wichita. She held that role for six years before taking on additional responsibilities as the school’s athletic director.

Shoemaker joined the Bethel coaching staff ahead of the 2024-25 season, gaining valuable experience under the guidance of Coach Lamar. Her familiarity with the program and her deep ties to Kansas basketball made her a natural fit for the role.

“Jara did a great job for us this year,” said Bethel College Athletic Director Tim Swartzendruber. “Her passion for coaching and the relationships she built this year will be positive for our women’s program. She was able to learn under a great coach, Rocky Lamar, and I believe she will continue building a successful program.”

Shoemaker shared her excitement about stepping into the head coaching role:
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead the Bethel College women’s basketball program. The excitement surrounding women’s basketball is at an all-time high, and I look forward to building on that momentum by fostering strong relationships and continuing to elevate the program. I want to thank Rocky (Lamar) for his leadership and mentorship—his impact on this team, community, and sport has been invaluable. I am honored to represent Bethel College and can’t wait to get to work.”
