West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey announced the addition of Bett Shelby as an associate head coach on Wednesday.
“I am excited and humbled to join Coach Carey’s staff at WVU,” Shelby said. “Coach Carey is one of the nation’s elite women’s basketball coaches and his teams always compete at the highest level with an incredible amount of toughness. That toughness that he instills in his players has translated into the program’s achievements here at WVU and afforded many players to go on and have success as pro basketball players. I look forward to building off the rich tradition that is already here as we craft the future of the program and cannot wait to mentor and coach our current players. These will be relationships that will last a lifetime. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to represent not just the University, but the state of West Virginia.”
Shelby arrives in Morgantown after spending the 2018-19 season at North Carolina, where she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Working with the guards, Shelby helped guide the program to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2015 and was in charge of all recruiting.
“We’re thrilled to have Bett join our staff,” Carey said. “Her reputation throughout the country as a recruiter and as a coach is impressive. We’re excited to have her in Morgantown and know she’ll do great things at West Virginia.”
Prior to her time in Chapel Hill, Shelby spent three seasons at Maryland, where one of her many accomplishments was landing a pair top-five recruiting classes. Additionally, she helped the Terps to Big Ten regular-season and conference tournament championships in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
From 2013-15, Shelby was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. During her tenure in Blacksburg, Shelby assisted with scouting and guard training while serving as the recruiting coordinator, signing a top-20 recruiting class for the Hokies in 2015.
Shelby spent the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons at Seton Hall, signing a class that ranked 33rd in the nation according to the All-Star Girls Report. In her second season with the Pirates, she helped the squad to its most wins in a season since 2006-07 and to its first BIG EAST Tournament win since 2009.
While at Southern Illinois, Shelby put together a recruiting class that ranked as the No. 1 mid-major class by ESPN HoopGurlz. Additionally, the group was touted as the No. 1 signing class in the Missouri Valley Conference and was ranked 57th overall by the All-Star Girls Report. Among the signees were SIU’s first Parade All-American, top-100 player and top-100 transfer as rated by the All-Star Girls Report.
Prior to SIU Shelby had stops at Tennessee Tech, where she put together the No. 1 recruiting class in the Ohio Valley Conference and a top-100 recruiting class via the All-Star Girls Report, and Stetson University, getting a top-100 class that ranked first in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Additionally, she spent two seasons serving as the Director of Basketball Operations at East Carolina, helping the Pirates to the Conference USA Title and the team’s first NCAA berth in 25 years.
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Shelby played two seasons at UNC Wilmington before transferring to Greensboro College. As a team captain, she led the Pride to the USA South regular-season and conference tournament titles, as well the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Shelby graduated from Greensboro with a bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise studies with a concentration in coaching in 2006. The daughter of Brad and Texie Shelby, she has one sister, Mary.
