Erskine College Vice President for Athletics Mark Peeler announced the hiring of Shannon Reid as head women’s basketball coach.
“We are really fortunate to be able to attract a coach of Shannon’s quality. Not only was she a great player in our league but she has proven to be an exceptional leader as a head coach. Shannon is a perfect fit for the mission of Erskine as well as having an understanding of the obstacles we face here. I am excited to see her future contributions to Fleet Athletics and our student-athletes,” commented Peeler.
Prior to Erskine, Reid served as the head coach at Brevard College from 2008-2016. At Brevard, she had three All-Conference players, the SAC Freshman of the Year, four 1,000 point scorers, one All-American, and the All-Time leading scorer in program history. Reid also served as an assistant coach at the University of Albany, Clayton State, and USC-Aiken before becoming a head coach.
Shannon graduated from Pfeiffer University in 2003 with a B.A. in Sports Management, while excelling on the court for the Falcons. She was the 2003 Pfeiffer University Athlete of the Year, as well as a two-time Most Valuable Player, CVAC Conference Player of the Year, four-time All-Conference, scored 1,000 career points, and led the Falcons to their first NCAA tournament appearance. She will also be inducted into the Pfeiffer University Hall of Fame in September of this year. Following graduation, Shannon played professionally in Drogheda, Ireland in 2003-2004.
On being named head coach, Reid said “I am extremely thankful and blessed for the opportunity to be the next head women’s basketball coach at Erskine College. I would like to thank President Gustafson and Athletic Director, Mark Peeler, for the opportunity to coach the game that I love, at a college that I have long admired. The current Flying Fleet roster is made up of a very talented group of student-athletes who I know will be eager to work hard and build on their recent success on the court and in the classroom. I look forward to engaging in this community and growing our Fleet family as well as leading the program to new heights.”
