Former Hatter women’s basketball standout and fan favorite Shanasa “Noc” Sanders is returning to Stetson University as an assistant coach, head coach Lynn Bria announced on Thursday.
After winning the 2013 ASUN Championship with the Hatters, Sanders played professionally for four years, making stops in the Czech Republic, Montenegro, Spain, and Bahrain.
“I am so happy we have someone who has won championships here as a player and who has had success playing overseas,” Bria said. “Noc is so well liked. Everyone respects her work ethic. There is no question she is one of the greatest players in program history, and she is just beloved by everyone off the court. I am real happy that she is coming on board with us.”
“I am extremely excited and humbled to be returning to my alma mater,” Sanders said. “I want to thank Coach Bria for believing in me and giving me this opportunity to return home to the Stetson family. The lifelong friendships and relationships I was able to build with the Hatter community were amazing. I’m ready to continue the winning tradition while learning from Coach Bria.”
Sanders most recently served as an assistant varsity girls coach and physical education instructor at her former high school, Ribault High School in Jacksonville. In 2017, she coached All-American Rennia Davis and All-American nominee Day’Neisha Banks and helped Ribault win the FHSAA 6A state championship.
Sanders professional career began with SSMH Brno in the Czech Republic in 2013. The next year, she played for Buducost Volkano in Podigorica, Montenegro where she earned Eurobasket.com Defensive Player of the Year and All-MZRKL second team honors. In 2015 she competed for Bizkaia Gernika in Spain and last summer she played for the Bahrain National Team.
Sanders began her collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati, where she earned Big East All-Freshman team honors in 2009. She would later transfer to Stetson where she played her final two seasons with the Hatters (2011-13). As a senior, Sanders earned second-team all-conference honors after ranking fourth in the league in scoring (13.8) and 11th in rebounding (6.5). Her stellar play in the ASUN Championship helped Stetson capture the conference title and advance to the NCAA tournament for just the third time in school history.
In her Hatter career, Sanders scored 856 points and pulled down 391 rebounds. She was a two-time ASUN Player of the Week, a four-time ASUN Newcomer of the Week, a Hatter Classic MVP, and she earned the ASUN Cron’s Achiever Award for February, 2013. She graduated from Stetson in 2013 with Bachelor’s Degrees in Business and Sport Management.
At Ribault, Sanders was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and the 2008 Florida Times-Union Player of the Year. She helped lead the Trojans to two district championships and the state final four.
Sanders replaces Brittany Young, who accepted a similar position at Old Dominion.
The Hatters went 26-7 overall last season and won the ASUN regular season title with a 13-1 league record.
