Southeast Missouri State head coach Rekha Patterson agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2021-22 season, Director of Athletics Brady Barke announced. SEMO also elevated Marc Wilson to the position of associate head coach.
Southeast made the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the third-straight year under Patterson. The Redhawks finished the 2017-18 campaign at 14-17 overall and seventh in the OVC with a 9-9 record after being voted eighth in the league’s preseason poll. The nine conference wins marked Southeast’s most in a season since 2008-09.
“Rekha has brought a renewed interest and sense of excitement to our Women’s Basketball program,” said Barke. “The future of the program is very bright and I look forward to continuing to work with Rekha and her staff to build a championship program.”
As a team, the Redhawks ranked among the top five in the OVC in steals (2nd, 9.6 spg), scoring defense (3rd, 62.4 ppg allowed), field goal percentage (3rd, .415), field goal percentage defense (3rd, .415), rebounding defense (4th, 35 rpg), blocks (4th, 3.5 bpg), 3-point field goal percentage defense (5th, .315) and offensive rebounds (5th, 12.6 rpg).
“In life, you win with people and I am very appreciative that President Carlos Vargas, Brady Barke and Cindy Gannon all agreed on this extension,” commented Patterson. “I look forward to continue building a program that positively represents this wonderful University and community.”
Wilson, who completed his first season as an assistant coach a year ago, has been elevated to associate head coach. He was the Redhawks defensive coordinator and coached the post players, while assisting in many other areas during the 2017-18 campaign.
“I’m honored and thrilled to be elevated to associate head coach at Southeast Missouri,” said Wilson. “I have much respect and admiration for Coach Patterson’s leadership, passion and energy to bring OVC Championships to SEMO, as well as her confidence in me to assist her in carrying out her mission. I’m very appreciative and again thank Coach Patterson for this exciting opportunity.”
Patterson added, “A year ago, we were lucky to be able to find a coach with Coach Wilson’s experience. A year later, we are even more grateful for his knowledge, passion and work ethic because he has made our program better.”
