Seattle U. adds assistant

Seattle University head women’s basketball coach Joan Bonvicini has announced the hiring of assistant coach Vivian Frieson. Frieson brings regional and local experience, as a Seattle native and a graduate of Gonzaga University. Her duties at Seattle U will include recruiting, position development, scouting, and assisting with the program’s summer camp.

“I am very excited to announce the hiring of Vivian Frieson as an assistant basketball coach,” said Bonvicini. “Vivian is a Seattle native and a proven winner from her days playing at Garfield High School. She excelled at Gonzaga University as a player and then continued to work with her staff at both her alma mater and, most recently, the University of Oregon. She has an infectious personality that will highlight our program.”

Most recently, Frieson served as video coordinator for the University of Oregon women’s basketball program. While there, she captured and edited film, creating edits for scouts and recruiting videos of prospective student-athletes.

Prior to Oregon, Frieson worked with the Gonzaga women’s basketball program in several different capacities, including as an interim assistant coach, administrative assistant, camp counselor, and organizer. She performed video coordinator duties as well as recruiting and evaluating prospective student-athletes.

A 2010 graduate of Gonzaga, Frieson helped lead the Bulldogs to their inaugural Sweet Sixteen appearance the same year, earning her bachelor’s degree in public relations. Frieson was selected as the 31st pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft by the Tulsa Shock, the first Zag in women’s basketball history to be drafted by the WNBA. She also played internationally in Mölndal, Sweden and Australia. Prior to Gonzaga, she attended and competed at Seattle’s Garfield High School.

"I am extremely excited and honored to become a member of the Seattle University women’s basketball staff,” said Frieson. “As a Seattle native, it is nice to get the opportunity to work close to home and help the women’s basketball scene continue to grow here. I am thrilled to be working with such a great staff and a young, hungry team who wants to continue to be better.”

Frieson replaces Shaquala Williams who joined the WNBA’s Seattle Storm as an assistant coach in March.
