Schmidt named assistant at Duquesne

Duquesne head coach Dan Burt has named Matt Schmidt an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program. Schmidt, a Johnstown, Pa. native, comes to the Bluff after serving as head women’s basketball coach at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga. the last five seasons.

At Armstrong Atlantic, Schmidt led the Pirates to 60 victories, 37 in the Peach Belt Conference. In his first season at the helm, Schmidt’s team won a program record 12 conference games.

Prior to his time at Armstrong Atlantic, Schmidt served as the top assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University for four seasons, where he helped the Norse win the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championship. Overall, NKU was 92-32 with Schmidt on staff.

Schmidt has also served as an assistant at Findlay University and University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He was also a graduate assistant coaching alongside Burt at West Virginia University. He was elevated to assistant coach when Burt left WVU.

Schmidt graduated from West Liberty State in 1996 and earned his master’s degree from West Virginia in 2000. Schmidt and his wife, Brittany, have a newborn son Jackson.
