San Jacinto College recently promoted Kayla Weaver to full-time women’s basketball assistant coach. She served as volunteer assistant coach last season, her first year with the College. She will also serve as a college preparatory math instructor.
As volunteer assistant coach last year, Weaver helped guide the team to a 22-11 record. San Jac ended the season as regional runner-up, the farthest any women’s basketball team has ever advanced in the history of the College.
Weaver came to San Jac from the University of Texas at Tyler, where she was an assistant coach. In her tenure at UT Tyler, the Patriots were American Southwest Conference regular season champions and advanced to the second round in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament, finishing with a 27-3 record.
Prior to her position at UT Tyler, she was an assistant coach at Panola College. During her three seasons at Panola, Weaver helped coach the Fillies to two Region XIV Tournament appearances, coached two All-Region XIV players and four All-Conference Players. Weaver gained valuable experience organizing individual player workouts, creating scouting reports and helping with recruitment of student-athletes.
Before coaching at Panola, Weaver played for the Fillies, garnering First Team All-Conference, Region XIV First Team, and Region XIV Academic First Team honors. She was also named the Panola College Buddy Lowery Award Winner as the top academic athlete in the graduating class.
During her college playing career, Weaver was also a member of the 2010-11 Lone Star Conference champions at Texas Woman’s University (TWU), garnering All-LSC First Team honors as well as being named the 2010-11 LSC Tournament MVP.
Weaver holds a bachelor’s degree from TWU with a major in mathematics and a minor in education. She also holds a master’s degree from TWU in kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching.
San Jac women’s basketball Head Coach Michael Madrid said he knows Weaver will hit the ground running in her new role. “Coach Weaver was a vital piece of our success last year,” he commented. “She will step in as the full-time assistant with an understanding of the culture and expectations here at San Jac. Her basketball knowledge, ability to relate to student-athletes and tremendous work ethic will be an asset to our program. She will be heavily involved in every aspect of our program from recruiting to academic support. We are fortunate to have a coach of her caliber.”
For her part, Weaver feels equally fortunate to work with Madrid. “I had the opportunity to play for Coach Madrid from 2010-2011 at TWU, so I think that makes the transition of coaching with him that much easier,” she remarked. “I believe in what we do here and Coach Madrid runs a great program. Players get better under his leadership both on and off the court. Last year we really built a foundation of success. That motivated us to keep the momentum going and to recruit student-athletes that have that same mentality. We have a very talented group this year and I am excited to be a part of their journey and this program.”
