Sam Houston State staff update

Rosalind Jennings and Stacy Stephens have joined Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols’ women’s basketball staff as assistant coaches.

Jennings has been the head women’s basketball coach at Alabama Southern Community College since 2006. Stephens comes to Huntsville from the University of Texas at Austin where she has served as women’s basketball special assistant since 2012.

“It’s exciting to add two outstanding coaches to our staff here at Sam Houston,” Nichols said. “Coach Jennings brings experience as a head coach and recruiting coordinator, combined with her tireless work ethic will make her an excellent addition. Coach Stephens has worked as an assistant coach and played at the highest levels of the sport. That combined with her youthful attitude will bring so much to our Sam Houston program.”

Jennings reunites with Nichols after serving as an assistant under Nichols at Mercer University.

Since 2006, Jennings has directed Alabama Southern to conference championships in 2008 and 2010 and has earned honors as Alabama Community College Conference coach of the year.

She also served as head coach at Lander University in 1995-96 and Erskine College from 1989 to 1995.

Jennings worked as an assistant coach at Mercer (2002-06), Troy State (1998-2002) and Paris Junior College (1997-98).

Inducted into the Erskine College Hall of Fame after an outstanding collegiate career, Jennings played professionally in the WBL.

Stephens is a former All-America player for the Longhorns. She was a finalist for the State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith Award during her junior and senior seasons. She also claimed Big 12 first-team honors in 2003 and 2004.

Stephens helped the Longhorns to a berth in the 2003 NCAA Final Four and to two regular- season and one tournament championship in the Big 12 Conference. She finished her collegiate career as the third Longhorn to collect 1,000-plus points and 1,000-plus rebounds. She averaged 12.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game during her Texas career.

Stephens was a third round WNBA draft pick for the Houston Comets in 2004 and she spent four years playing professionally in both the United States and overseas in Turkey, Sweden and Portugal.

She returned to Austin in 2012 where she coordinated day-to-day operations, assisted with year-round recruiting efforts and oversaw alumni relations.

In 2007, she was named an assistant coach at Fort Worth Christian High School and later joined the collegiate coaching ranks as an assistant coach at Cisco College for the 2009-10 season. After one year in Cisco, Stephens served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Texas College for two seasons and was also a Student Activities Coordinator for the Texas College student body during the 2011-12 academic year.
