Peter Sabiiti has been appointed head women’s basketball coach at Olivet College, according to an announcement by Athletic Director Haley Hunnewell. Sabiiti replaces Brittany Zandstra, who resigned to take a new job closer to home and ability to spend more time with her family.
“I am excited Peter has chosen to become a part of the Olivet coaching staff,” said Hunnewell. “He has an incredible work ethic and brings great enthusiasm to our women’s basketball program. I anticipate great things to come for the Comets.”
Sabiiti comes to Olivet from Aquinas College, where he has been the assistant varsity and head junior varsity men’s basketball coach for the last five years. While there, Sabiiti assisted with all facets of the program, including recruiting of prospective student-athletes, mentoring student-athletes, assessing given strengths and weaknesses of players and advancing skill sets to perform successfully, and planning and instructing camps and clinics. In addition, he has worked as a parenting nurturing direct care worker at Arbor Circle in Grand Rapids since March 2015.
“All the glory goes to God,” said Sabiiti. “I would like to thank Haley for this great opportunity and I am looking forward to being an Olivet Comet! I would also like to thank Dave Hammer, Rod Hathaway, Gene Gifford and Mike Lightfoot for the mentorship throughout the process. My time at Aquinas was very fruitful as I grew from both Ryan Bertoia and Joe Powers. None of this would have been possible without the support of my mom (Donata), dad (Geoffrey) and two brothers (Shema and Joshua).”
Sabiiti earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from Aquinas in 2014 and master’s degree in ministry and leadership from Cornerstone University in 2020. As a student at Aquinas, he played basketball for two seasons before becoming a student assistant coach for his final two seasons.
