RIC HC departs for URI

Rhode Island head coach Cathy Inglese has announced the hiring of Marcus Reilly as an assistant on the women’s basketball staff. Reilly – who replaces Kelly Morrone – comes to URI after leading Division III Rhode Island College to a 25-4 record this past season, as well as the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1985.

The 2011-12 New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Coach of the Year, Reilly guided his Anchorwomen to the school’s first-ever Little East Conference Regular Season and Tournament titles in his final season at RIC. In doing so, he earned the league’s Coach of the Year award as well as the Cox Sports R.I. Basketball Media Tom Carmody Award – which signified him as the Coach of the Year among all of Rhode Island’s collegiate women’s basketball programs.

In his four seasons at Rhode Island College, Reilly complied a 71-37 (.657) record – the most wins and best winning percentage over any four-year span in school history. He also posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in program history, in addition to producing seven All-Conference honorees, a Rookie of the Year and a Defensive Player of the Year.

Reilly took over the RIC program after leading the Community College of Rhode Island to a 45-21 record and two straight Elite Eight appearances in 2006-07 and 2007-08. The two-year stint was his second at CCRI as he also served as the Knights’ head coach from 2001-2003. During that span, he recruited and coached the school’s first four All-Americans and first five Division I transfers.

Over his four years at the helm of the CCRI program, Reilly combined for an overall record of 77-37 (.675).
