Boston Celtics assistant coach Kara Lawson is expected to be named as the new head women’s basketball coach at Duke. This was first reported the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn and confirmed by NBC Sports Boston’s A. Sherrod Blakely.
Lawson, who spent the past season as an assistant with the Celtics, is a former standout at Tennessee who had a 13-year WNBA career. She had also spent time as announcer for ESPN following her playing career. Lawson was a member of the USA’s gold medal winning women’s basketball team in the 2008 Olympics, and she also captured the 2005 WNBA Championship.
According to the Raleigh News & Observer, Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca (a Duke Board of Trustees member) was in favor of the school hiring Lawson.
More on this when it become official.
