University of Akron women’s basketball head coach Jodi Kest announced on Tuesday that Preston Reid has been promoted to assistant coach after spending the last two seasons as the Zips’ graduate assistant.
His promotion is pending approval by the University’s Board of Trustees.
"Having worked with Preston over the past two seasons, I am very confident that he will do a great job in his new role," Kest said. "Preston is a hard worker who is very dedicated to our program. He has a great understanding of the game and will be an asset to our players. He has a very bright future as a coach."
During his time as Akron’s graduate assistant, Reid helped the Zips to a 46-20 record while maintaining the Zips’ scouting database, overseeing managers and practice players, creating team videos and assisting with workouts, practices and community outreach efforts.
In his new position, Reid will coach the Akron post players, assist with recruiting and scouting reports, oversee equipment, among other duties.
"I am very fortunate and honored to be a part of Coach Kest’s staff as an assistant coach," Reid said. "I will work my hardest to continue the championship expectations that she has instilled in this program."
Prior to Akron, Reid was a practice player for one season and the head manager and video coordinator for three seasons at Ball State University, where he graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in English education. Under former Cardinals head coach Kelly Packard, Reid was a member of the staff in 2009 when the program defeated perennial powerhouse Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Reid spent the 2011-12 season at Florida State University as the assistant video coordinator, where he was in charge of logging games, breaking down film and film exchange. He has also spent time as a video intern with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and WNBA’s Indiana Fever.
Reid completed his masters degree in sport science and coaching from Akron this past spring.
