Reay Resigns at Midwestern State

Christopher Reay resigned as head coach of the Midwestern State women’s basketball program Thursday afternoon.

“MSU Athletics has been blessed to have Coach Chris Reay for all his contributions and for his role as a player and then a coach here at Midwestern State,” MSU Director of Athletics Kyle Williams said. “He gave tirelessly of himself to the women’s program and MSU Athletics. We wish he and his family all the best.”

Reay posted a 35-48 record as a head coach after taking over Noel Johnson late in the 2019-20 season.

He led the Mustangs to three consecutive Lone Star Conference postseason appearances reaching the quarterfinal round in 2021. His teams posted winning ledges of 11-7 during the coronavirus pandemic shortened season of 2020-21, then went 14-13 the next year.

Reay served as the Johnson’s top assistant for 10 seasons playing a key role in helping the Mustangs to an LSC championship in 2012-13. MSU posted its top record as an NCAA Division II program that season going 26-6 while advancing to the South Central Region finals.

The Mustangs returned to the NCAA Division II postseason in the next two seasons going 18-12 in 2013-14 and 23-7 while finishing as LSC runners-up in 2014-15.

Reay enjoyed a solid playing career helping the Mustangs to a Lone Star Conference title and onto the NCAA Division II South Central Region semifinals in 2006-07.

He was the inaugural winner of the Marie Morgan presented to the MSU’s most well-rounded student-athlete in 2008.

A national search for Midwestern State’s next head coach begins immediately.
