Rainbolt resigns at Southern Arkansas

Southern Arkansas University Director of Athletics Steve Browning has announced the resignation of Rusty Rainbolt as head women’s basketball coach at Southern Arkansas, effective immediately.

Rainbolt steps down from his post at SAU in order to pursue personal interests in his hometown of Sweetwater, Texas where he will assume the role of Girl’s Athletic Coordinator at Sweetwater High School.

"We wish Coach Rainbolt all the best in his future endeavors," remarked Browning. "What he was able to accomplish for our women’s basketball program in his time at SAU has laid a foundation for the program to continue to build upon for years to come."

Upon his arrival at SAU, Rainbolt inherited a program that went winless the season prior and was mired in a 35-game losing skid. In his two seasons, Rainbolt would win 21 games, including 12 in his first season, and led the Lady Muleriders to consecutive Great American Conference Tournament appearances after not qualifying the first two years of the GAC.

"I want to thank Dr. Rankin, Coach Browning, and the people of SAU for giving me this opportunity a couple of years ago," remarked Rainbolt. "The decision to leave SAU at this time was personal and is in the best interest of my family as we are able to move back to my wife and I’s hometown."

A nation-wide search for Southern Arkansas’ next head women’s basketball coach will begin immediately. Those interested in applying are asked to contact the Human Resources department at SAU (870) 235-4008.
