Quinnipiac University Director of Athletics & Recreation Greg Amodio has announced that women’s basketball head coach Tricia Fabbri has signed a contract extension through the 2021-22 season. The Bobcats completed one of the most incredible seasons in program history that featured a trip to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
“Quinnipiac women’s basketball’s landmark 2016-17 season was a product of the vision and guidance of Tricia Fabbri and her staff,” Amodio said. “Coach Fabbri has done a remarkable job in building a program that can compete on a national stage, as it did with last year’s run to the Sweet 16. I’m sure I speak for the entire Quinnipiac community when I say that we are thrilled to have her at the helm of our women’s basketball team as she continues to serve as an incredible role model for our student-athletes.”
The Bobcats incredible season featured the program’s first two NCAA Tournament victories, as Quinnipiac rolled past No. 25 Marquette and No. 16 Miami, which also served as the Bobcats first two wins against ranked opponents in program history. The Bobcats became just the fourth 12th seed in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to advance to the Sweet 16 before losing to NCAA National Champions South Carolina. The Bobcats finished the season ranked 23rd in the final USA Today Coaches’ Poll for the program’s first national ranking and were also ranked No. 1 in the final College Inside Mid-Major Poll.
“It is a privilege to be the women’s basketball head coach at Quinnipiac University. I’d like to thank President John Lahey, Executive Vice President Mark Thompson and Director of Athletics & Recreation Greg Amodio for their continued leadership and support of the women’s basketball program,” Fabbri said. “Without their vision for our University our Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament would not have been possible.”
In 2016-17, Fabbri guided Quinnipiac to its sixth-straight 20-win season, fifth-straight conference championship game, sixth-straight trip to a national postseason tournament and its third-consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. Fabbri boasts 379 career wins including a 158-46 record from 2011 through 2017. In addition, Quinnipiac is 39-3 over the last three seasons on its home court and 76-13 in four seasons in MAAC games.
“Basketball is a team sport, so I would be remiss to not publicly thank my coaching staff, players and support staff – all of whom made this past season so SWEET!” Fabbri said. “Each person is dedicated to making this program the best it can be – we are family, we are gritty!”
Fabbri is a five-time conference coach of the year, winning two MAAC honors (2014-15, 2015-16) as well as two Northeast Conference honors (2012-13, 2005-06, 2000-01). Fabbri joins legendary coaches Burt Kahn, Dan “Skip” Gooley, Mike Quitko and Rand Pecknold as one of just five head coaches to win 350+ games in their time with the Bobcats. Fabbri reached the 350-win plateau in the 2016 WNIT First Round as Quinnipiac throttled Maine, 90-44, at home in what signified the largest winning margin in the program’s NCAA Div. I history (since 1998-99) as well as the first national postseason tournament win.
