Possail Named Columbia College Head Women’s Basketball Coach

The Columbia College athletic department announced today the promotion of Taylor Possail to the women’s basketball head coaching position. Possail has spent the past three season as the women’s basketball assistant coach and will be the third head coach of the women’s basketball program since it was established in 2001.

“We are very excited to announce the promotion of Taylor Possail as our next head women’s basketball coach,” said Columbia College Athletic Director Bob Burchard. “Taylor has been an integral part of our program’s success the past three years.  During his interview it became apparent he is the right choice to continue the positive trajectory of our program.  Taylor is a person of high character. His energy and enthusiasm for coaching, teaching, and mentoring our students is not only evident but contagious!  We look forward to Taylor assuming these new responsibilities and are confident under his leadership our women’s basketball program will continue to achieve at the highest levels.”

In three seasons with the Cougars, Possail has helped guide the team to a 75-23 record. He has coached five NAIA All-American honorees, 25 Academic All-Conference recipients, six Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and 10 All-Conference selections. Following this year’s 26-6 campaign, Possail was named the WBCA Assistant Coach of the Year.

Possail has been active in all aspects of coaching during his time with the Cougars, assisting with recruiting, scouting preparations, in-game coaching and has been especially energetic when it comes to the academic side of the team. He took the lead in planning and executing an academic plan for each member of the team which became extremely apparent this year after the team posted a 3.52 team GPA in the 2016-17 academic year.

“I am extremely excited and beyond honored to be the next head coach of the Columbia College women’s basketball program,” said Possail.  “I want to thank Coach Burchard and the rest of the athletic department for the opportunity to lead such a storied program.”

Prior to coming to Columbia College the Tyler, Minnesota, native spent three seasons, two as women’s head coach, at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School in Janesville, Minnesota. While at JWP, he led the Bulldogs to their first winning season in eight years during the 2013-2014 campaign.  That same year, they set the school record for points per game at 59.6, as well as points in a single game with 96.

Taylor resides in Columbia with his fiancé Nicole.  He graduated from Winona State University in 2012 with a degree in Business Education and received his Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Columbia College in 2015.

“I look forward to continuing to build on what has already been accomplished at Columbia College.  We will continue to produce teams full of young ladies who proudly represent Columbia College on the court, in the classroom, and within the Columbia community.”
