Portland State parts ways with Women’s Basketball Coach Chelsey Gregg

Portland State Athletics has parted ways with head women’s basketball coach Chelsey Gregg, Athletic Director Matt Billings announced Wednesday.

Gregg spent the past 10 seasons on the Park Blocks, serving as first an assistant (2015-18), then an associate head coach (2018-21) before taking over as head coach for the past four seasons (2021-25).

Gregg helped turn around a Viking program that went 0-20 in Big Sky play during her first year at the helm to one that won eight conference games and made the Big Sky semifinals in her second year. The +8 win differential within Big Sky play was the largest year-to-year improvement in program history.

But the Vikings failed to capitalize on that momentum the past two seasons. The Vikings went 8-23 overall and 3-15 in Big Sky play during the 2023-24 season, then 4-24 overall and 1-17 in Big Sky play this past season.

“We are thankful for the years of work Chelsey has put into our program. However, at this time, we thought it was in the best interest of our student-athletes and department to move in a different direction. We are eager to see Vikings women’s basketball return to the top of the Big Sky Conference once again,” Billings said of the decision.

Billings and the Vikings will begin a national search for the next head women’s basketball coach immediately.
