Peru State women’s basketball head coach Joan Albury has announced the addition of Emilie Ziese as she joins the coaching staff of the women’s basketball program. This will be her first year as a graduate assistant coach for the Bobcats.
A New Albany, Ind., native, Ziese began her collegiate career playing at Georgetown (Ky.) College. There, Ziese served on the Student Health Advisory Council for the school. Ziese was honored as a two-time academic all-conference and received awards such as Presidential Outstanding Leader Award and Servant-Leadership Award. She also received the W.J. Lewis Memorial Academic Achievement.
Athletically, Ziese was an NAIA All-American honorable mention and was a two-time most valuable player for the Tigers. Her senior season, the forward finished nationally ranked 13th in rebounds per game (10.3), 14th in defensive rebounds per game (6.8), 20th in offensive rebounds per game (3.6), and 31st in total rebounds with 258.
Ziese describes herself as, “An experienced basketball player with dynamic skills and exemplifies characteristics of hard work, passion, and integrity.” She believes that as a leader with basketball knowledge, combined with hard work, love, and respect for others by effectively communicating and demonstrating these qualities in order to enthusiastically help others achieve their greatest potential on and off the basketball court. Head coach Albury stated, “Emilie will bring a strong work ethic and dedication to help individual player improvement, especially at the post position. Her technological skills will enhance our film breakdown and scouting capabilities.”
A Rensselaer Central high school (Rensselaer, Ind.) 2013 graduate, Ziese received her bachelor’s degree in biology, with a minor in chemistry from Georgetown in 2017. Shortly after, Ziese worked as a women’s basketball volunteer assistant coach and women’s basketball volunteer junior varsity coach for the Georgetown Tigers.
Coach Albury continued, “She has a passion for the game of basketball and will work to learn all aspects of becoming a future head coach. Ziese is eager to pursue a master’s degree and develop her skills as a coach. She is pursuing her degree in organization management with an emphasis on sports & recreation management through Wayne State College.”
Ziese is excited to come to Peru State. She stated, “I am extremely excited to be a part of Peru State College Women’s Basketball program, as well as, to work with Coach Albury. For the short time that I have gotten to know her, I believe she is making great strides to put the program in the best possible position for success. She will be a great coach and mentor to learn from. On top of that I am excited to be in a position to coach. I love helping others become the best that they can be, whether that be on or off the court. Many of the advocates or role models in my life are coaches and teachers, so I believe that it is a privilege to be in the position I am today.”
Continuing, Ziese added, “When I was in high school my mom introduced me to the famous coach and teacher John Wooden, not until after college did I start studying him more adamantly, but a quote that sticks with me still today is from his book, Leadership. In talking about success and effort, as effort proceeds success and “winning”, John Wooden states, “There is a standard higher than merely winning the race: Effort is the ultimate measure of your success…I tell you with certainty that when you accomplish the formidable task of making the full, 100 percent effort to do your best, you may call yourself a success because you are one.”
