Pensacola State names head coach

Penny Jones has been named as the head coach at Pensacola State College.

“Coach Jones comes to Pensacola State with a solid, if not tenacious, background as a player and a proven track record as an assistant coach,” stated Bill Hamilton, athletic director for Pensacola State College.

Jones is currently an assistant coach at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. She played basketball at Washington High School in Pensacola under the legendary Coach Ronnie Bond, where she assisted her team in winning the 4A state championship with a record of 31-0 her senior year. At the University of West Florida, Jones was a four-year starter, team Defensive Player of the Year for three years, team MVP once, and still ranks second in UWF history in career assists and is eighth in steals.

Her coaching experience includes two seasons as Director of Basketball Operations for the University of South Alabama, as well as assistant coach at Seward County Community College for three seasons, where she coached four All-Americans, seven All-Region and eight All-Conference players. The team was a combined 80-20 with a 31-3 record in 2009-10 (Middle of the 3).

“The timing was perfect for Coach Jones and PSC,” stated Hamilton. “She is ready for the challenge, welcomes the pressure of being local, and will enjoy the support of our college and community. We were looking for someone with all of her talent and I am happy that our institution is one that can attract people of this caliber.”

Pensacola State College will host a press conference in April to introduce Jones.
