Pacheco rounds out coaching staff with addition of Gabriela Martins as a graduate assistant

Southern Arkansas head women’s basketball coach Julio Pacheco has finalized his 2016-17 coaching staff as he announced the addition of Gabriela Martins as a graduate assistant.

Martins, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, comes to SAU after finishing her collegiate playing career with a two-year tenure at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark. Prior to that, Martins played two seasons at Midland College in Midland, Texas.

While at both schools, Martins was a part of 102 wins and played on teams that won 27 or more games three times including a 30-4 mark in her final season at Lyon. That year at Lyon, Martins helped lead the Scots to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament and a national ranking as high as No. 3 during the year.

Additionally, at Midland and at Lyon, Martins was a backup point guard her first season and then became the team’s starter the following year. For her career, Martins dished out over 300 assists with a single-season best 106 assists in her final season at Lyon.

Prior to her collegiate basketball days, Martins played club basketball in Brazil for eight years. Martins also played on Brazil’s Women’s U16 National Basketball Team where she served as the team captain.

A double-major at Lyon, Martins earned degrees in Business Administration (Finance) and Economics in the spring of 2016. Her work in the classroom at Lyon earned Martins American Midwest Conference (AMC) All-Academic Team honors both years.

Martins is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Business Administration at Southern Arkansas University.
