Osahor Joins Drake Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff

Former Washington standout and WNBA first round draft selection Chantel Osahor has been hired as the Drake women’s basketball graduate manager, head coach Jennie Baranczyk announced on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

“I’ve followed Chantel for a long time,” Baranczyk said. “I recruited her and then followed her at Washington, where she had an awesome career. Chantel has won at so many different levels and I know that she will bring that into her coaching career. We are thrilled to have Chantel start her coaching career here at Drake with our staff and team. With this addition, we know we’ve hit the jackpot again and we couldn’t be more excited to have her join our staff!”

Osahor played four seasons for the Huskies helping them qualify for the NCAA Tournament three times, including trips to the 2016 Final Four and 2017 Sweet Sixteen. She is Washington’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,253 in her outstanding career. Osahor tied the Pac-12 record for most rebounds in a season with 519 as a senior and earned multiple All-America honors. Osahor was drafted 21st overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2017 WNBA draft and later traded to the Minnesota Lynx, where she was one of the final roster cuts from the Lynx training camp roster.

In her senior season, the Phoenix, Ariz. native led the nation in rebounds per game (15.8) and double-doubles (30). She registered 20 or more boards in eight contests, including a Pac-12 record 30 against Washington State. Osahor was also second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game and assists (140). She was named the 2016 NCAA Lexington Regional MVP after averaging 14.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per game.

“I’m very thankful to Jennie and her staff for this opportunity,” Osahor said. “I have known for a while I wanted to be a coach and I can’t think of a better place to start my young coaching career then Drake. I’m super excited and can’t wait to get started!”

Osahor twice earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors at Washington. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
