Oklahoma Wesleyan University athletic director Kirk Kelley announced the hiring of Heidi Messer as the next head coach for the OKWU women’s basketball program.
“We are excited to announce Heidi as our new women’s basketball head coach,” Kelley said. “She is a great mission fit, and I feel her enthusiasm will be contagious. She is ready to hit the floor running.”
“I am very excited to be joining the OKWU family,” Messer said, “and grateful to Dr. Dunn and Kirk Kelley for the opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program.”
Messer has spent the last 5 seasons as an assistant coach at Northeastern State. Prior to joining the NSU staff, Messer spent time on staff at the University of Montevallo and at Manchester University (Ind.). In the summer of 2021, Messer was on staff of a USA Sports Basketball team that toured Brazil. The team was made up of NCAA Division II players.
Messer graduated with a degree in Health and Physical Education from Grace College in 2009. She played at Grace for two seasons, serving as team captain as a senior and recording the eighth-highest assist total in program history.
Messer served as graduate assistant at Georgetown College (Ky) from 2009-11, where she also earned a Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership. While at Georgetown, Messer coached two All-Americans and four All-Conference players.
