Following up on some “dirt” that I posted yesterday. It’s now been made official that Mount Saint Mary’s won’t renew the contract of head women’s basketball coach Bryan Whitten.
Whitten compiled a record of 117-184 in his 10 seasons at Mount St. Mary’s, including an 81-99 mark in Northeast Conference regular season games. This year, the Mountaineers went 12-18 overall, and finished in fifth place in the NEC standings with a 10-8 league record. The Mountaineers lost to Bryant in the NEC quarterfinals. Mount St. Mary’s advanced to the postseason one time during Whitten’s tenure, an appearance in the Women’s NIT in 2013-14.
“Decisions like this are always difficult, but after a review of our women’s basketball program, I believe that a leadership change is needed,” said Robinson. “I am very grateful to Bryan for his 10 years of dedicated service to the Mount St. Mary’s University women’s basketball program and the Mount community. I thank Bryan for his steadfast commitment to the success of the student-athletes in our program, both on and off the court.”
Mount St. Mary’s will begin a national search for its next head coach immediately. No further comment from the athletics department regarding the search will be made until a new coach has been appointed.
