Oesterle out at Women’s Basketball Head Coach at Central Michigan

Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Amy Folan and Central Michigan Athletics has announced a change of leadership in its women’s basketball program. Heather Oesterle will not return as head coach and a national search for the program’s next head coach begins immediately.

“Heather Oesterle has been an integral part of the most historic run in CMU women’s basketball history,” Folan said. “I want to thank Heather for her dedication to and impact on our student-athletes, the university, and Mount Pleasant community during her 13 years of service at Central Michigan University.”

“At this time, I have determined that we need to go in a different direction with the leadership of our women’s basketball program. I am confident that our program’s history of success, our commitment to women’s basketball and the development of young women will attract a high-caliber candidate pool during our head coaching search.”

In her four years as Central Michigan’s head coach, Oesterle compiled a 51-64 overall record and 35-40 MAC record. She guided the CMU Chippewas to the 2019-20 MAC regular season title and 2020-21 MAC tournament championship. Oesterle previously served nine years under Sue Guevara, the final seven as the program’s associate head coach.

Central Michigan finished 4-25 in 2021-22 and 6-23 last season; the team did not advance to the MAC Tournament in either of the last two seasons.

Associate Head Coach Courtney Shelton will lead the program in the interim until a new head coach is appointed.
