Doug Novak has joined Northern Kentucky Women’s Basketball as an assistant coach to round out head coach Camryn Volz’s staff for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
“We are thrilled Coach Novak and his family have chosen to be a part of our Women’s Basketball team at NKU,” said Coach Volz (Whitaker). “Doug brings 30+ years of coaching experience at all levels and I am excited for our staff and team to get to learn and grow from him. His offensive system is his staple and he understands how to teach and motivate young student athletes to get the most out of them on and off the court! Welcome to Doug, his wife Tonya and daughter Grace to Northern Kentucky University.”
Novak possesses nearly three decades of coaching experience, most recently serving as the associate head coach for the men’s basketball program at Army West Point during the 2022-23 season. Before West Point, he was the interim head coach for the women’s basketball program at Mississippi State in 2021-22, where he led the Bulldogs to a 15-14 overall record, and helped lead his squad to being named the NCAA Team of the Week twice.
Prior to his lone season with Mississippi State Women, Novak served as the Head Men’s Coach at Bethel University from 2013-21. There he composited an overall record of 131-68 in eight seasons. He left with the highest winning percentage (.658) of any Bethel basketball coach in program history. In 2017 he led the Royals to a share of the program’s first ever MIAC regular season championship, second-ever MIAC Playoff Championship and second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Novak’s group rattled off six consecutive MIAC Playoff appearances, advancing to the semifinals three times (2014, 2016, 2018) and the championship game three times (2015, 2017, 2018) while hosting the championship game in both 2017 & 2018
Before his coach success at Bethel, Novak saw coaching stops at Tulane University (Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, 2010-13), The Citadel (Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, 2006-10), Anderson University (Head Men’s Basketball Coach, 1999-2006), Francis Marion University (Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, 1998-99), Iowa Western Community College (Head Men’s Basketball Coach/Athletic Director, 1995-98) and Roane State Community College (Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, 1992-95).
He was the lead assistant as Tulane won 20 games and made a CollegeInsider.com Tournament appearance during his final season in 2012-13. He also helped turn around The Citadel and double the program’s win total within three seasons. The Citadel had a trio of mid-major All-America picks while Novak was with the Bulldogs.
Novak has had previous stops at Roane State Community College, Iowa Western Community College, Francis Marion University and Anderson University. He guided Anderson to the program’s first Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Association (CVAC) Championship as a head coach.
He is no stranger to competing at the highest level in collegiate athletics either, as Novak was a four-year member of the men’s tennis team at the University of Tennessee and helped lead the program to a No. 1 national ranking and a runner-up finish in the 1990 NCAA Tournament. Novak graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1990 with a degree in Psychology. He then earned his Masters degree in Counseling in 1992 from Clemson University. He additionally served as an assistant coach for tennis at Clemson University.
Novak and his wife, Tonya have three daughters Mackenzie, Sarah and Grace. He is originally from Brandon, South Dakota. His wife Tonya was a stellar collegiate athlete as well, as she was an All-Big Ten tennis player at the University of Minnesota.
