Northwest Christian University Athletic Director Corey Anderson announced on Tuesday the hiring of Heath Alexander to serve as the third head coach for the Beacon women’s basketball program.
Alexander has ten years of experience as an assistant coach and recruiter at a number of NCAA Division I institutions and will begin his first head coaching assignment with NCU.
Anderson said, "We are very excited to be bringing in a head coach with the overall collegiate experience that Heath has. His background in both coaching and recruiting will provide a great foundation for our women’s basketball program and its continued growth. Coach Alexander is well known and respected by high school, AAU and junior college coaches in the northwest as a strong recruiter and knowledgeable coach. His reputation as an honest, hard-working and personable coach has been well earned on his coaching journey. We are very excited to welcome Heath and his family to Northwest Christian University!"
Most recently, Alexander served four years as an assistant with the Weber State University women’s basketball team where he was the lead recruiter. He was also heavily involved with player development and scouting efforts. Prior to Weber State, Alexander was at Colorado State University for two seasons where he was also in charge of local and national recruiting.
"I was drawn to this job because of the people at the university," said Alexander. "I have always believed that it is not the place but the people that make things special and that is very true at NCU. The facilities are incredible, the campus is beautiful and the people that work and lead the university and athletic department have a vision and plan that leads to success. I would like to thank Athletic Director Corey Anderson, the hiring committee and President Dr. Womack for the opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program. The vision of NCU and the leadership that is in place is very special and I feel truly blessed to be part of Northwest Christian University community."
Alexander has strong ties to the Willamette Valley. His first collegiate coaching job was at Oregon State University under head coach Judy Spoelstra. After one year as the Director of Basketball Operations, Alexander was elevated to an assistant coach position which he held for three seasons. During his tenure the Beavers advanced to back-to-back Women’s NIT appearances.
Alexander holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Movement from the University of Oregon, where he served as a manager with the men’s basketball team for four years. Alexander also taught and helped coach basketball at Marist High School from 1998-2001.
Alexander replaces Liz Turner-Bolton who resigned in May after seven seasons at the helm of the program. The Beacons will be coming off back-to-back appearances in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament, having gone 9-19 last season with a 5-13 mark in the CCC.
