Northeastern State women’s basketball coach Randy Gipson announced Tuesday the hiring of Dave Ketterman as the new assistant coach for the program.

Ketterman joins the RiverHawks after having spent the past 10 seasons as the athletics director and head women’s basketball coach at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo.

"We feel very fortunate to hire someone the caliber of Dave Ketterman as our new assistant," Gipson said. "He brings a wealth of experience as a successful teacher, coach and administrator that will benefit all aspects of our basketball program. Dave has lived and worked for most of his life in southwest Missouri and understands the competitive challenges of the MIAA."

During his time with the Comets, who compete at the NJCAA Division II level, he compiled a 131-104 record that included one Region 16 Regular Season Championship (2009) and three runner-up finishes (2006-08). He guided CC to seven winning seasons over the past nine years, and the team earned top-20 national rankings in four of the past six campaigns.

Ketterman has coached 43 all-region performers, five All-Americans and seven academic All-Americans. He follows former player Caley Shaffstall, who recently signed a National Letter of Intent to transfer to NSU.

Prior to his move to Cottey, Ketterman worked in the Nevada R-5 School District serving in a wide variety of roles from 1991-04. He was the varsity girls basketball coach (1991-93), middle school volleyball coach (1991-93), middle school track coach (1991-97), varsity cross country coach (1993-98), varsity boys tennis coach (1998), varsity assistant boys basketball coach (2001-03), and varsity girls swimming coach (2000-06).

He worked for the El Dorado Springs R-2 School District from 1986-90 as the girls basketball and volleyball coach.

He was the head women’s basketball coach at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, from 1983-86, and he compiled an 80-20 mark during his tenure. He was honored as the NAIA District 8 Coach of the Year twice (1984-85), the American Women’s Sports Federation Southwest Region Coach of the Year (1985) and the American Women’s Sports Federation All-American Coach of the Year (1985).

He guided the Pioneers to a third-place finish at the NAIA National Championship tournament in 1985 and had nine players named NAIA All-Americans.

Prior to moving to WBU, Ketterman was at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, from 1980-83 as the assistant women’s basketball coach and head recruiter under Sue Gunter.

Ketterman began his professional career as an assistant coach and physical education instructor from 1977-80 at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was the first full-time assistant under Joann Rutherford for the NCAA Division I program, also serving as the head recruiter. He helped lead the 1978 squad to a Big 8 Championship.

He received a master’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1978 and obtained a bachelor of science degree in education from Southwest Missouri State University in 1977.

Ketterman and wife Cathy have two daughters, Jessie Grant and Hannah.
