University of North Georgia head women’s basketball coach Buffie Burson has announced the hiring of former student-athlete and graduate assistant, Jaymee Acton as assistant coach for the women’s basketball program. Acton enters her new role after serving in the capacity of graduate assistant coach for the previous two seasons.
The then-Jaymee Carnes was a national standout in her time on the hardwood as a student-athlete, being named the Daktronics Division II National Player of the Year in her sophomore season.
Acton would be selected to the Peach Belt All-Conference and Southeast All-Region teams again in her junior season. She set multiple league and school records as she became just the second player in PBC history to lead the nation in scoring as she finished the season averaging 25.0 points per game off 624 total points, the tenth-highest single-season total in the history of the Peach Belt. She set school records in total points in a season, scoring average in a season and free throws made (180).
She also set the NCAA Division II records for points in a game (40), blocks in a game (nine) and field goals made in a game (16) in the span of just 35 days.
Acton scored at least 30 points three times during the season including her career-high 40 against Brenau in a North Georgia’s 86-67 win on Nov. 25.
Prior to transferring to UNG, Acton played one season at NCAA Division I Wake Forest where she played in 28 contests as a freshman.
The Gainesville native will assist Burson with all aspects of the program.
