Newberg Introduced as BMCC Head Coach

The Borough of Manhattan Community College athletics department announced on Monday the hiring of Ben Newberg as head women’s basketball coach. Newberg arrives after serving as assistant coach of the CCNY women’s basketball team last season.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to coach at BMCC,” said Newberg. “BMCC has a beautiful campus, tremendous athletic facilities and staff who go above and beyond to make sure things are done the right way. I’m glad to be a part of the BMCC family and am looking forward to working with the student-athletes.”

At CCNY, Newberg assisted in daily basketball operations, including recruiting, the academic monitoring of players, game and practicing planning as well as film study.

Prior to CCNY, Newberg was the assistant men’s basketball coach at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY. He arrived at Mercy after helping lead Sullivan County Community College’s men’s basketball team to a 31-5 record and a Region XV championship in 2012-13 as an assistant coach.

Newberg also spent time on SUNY New Paltz (2010-11) and SUNY Albany’s (2008-10) men’s basketball staffs.

In addition to his collegiate experience, Newberg has worked with numerous amateur and AAU programs. In 2013, he served as head coach of the Sullivan Select AAU Team boy’s basketball team and led them to multiple tournament championships in the program’s first year of existence.

For the 2011-12 season, Newberg was the assistant boy’s JV and varsity coach at Monticello High School and helped lead the varsity program to the sectional semifinal.

Newberg earned a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany in 2010 and most recently completed his MBA at Mercy College in August of 2014.

A resident of West Harrison, NY, Newberg currently works as a basketball instructor and AAU coach at House of Sports in Ardsley, NY.
